Home Garden Trap Crops

Trap crops aren’t often used in the home garden, even though they can be very effective at keeping pests away from the more desirable fruits and vegetables.

While there is quite a few trap crops, I’m only going to be talking about two, Sunflowers and Nasturtiums, which can both be grown for food themselves.

Home Garden Trap Crops

1. Sunflowers are best known for their beautiful flowers and the great tasting seeds.

Growing as little as 2 feet tall to 10 feet plus with a variety of colors, there’s a lot of diversity among these beautiful flowers.

The thing that makes them a good plant for the garden is the fondness that aphids and stink bugs have for them. This fondness for sunflowers provides these pests with a nice diversion, any aphids that are on a sunflower aren’t on your tomatoes.

2. Nasturtium, the flowers of genus Tropaeolum, not to be confused with the watercress with the genus name Nasturtium. Don’t worry about these scientific names, walk into a nursery or garden center and ask for Nasturtium, they’ll show you the right ones.

These plants are most often used as an ornamental flower, yet they are entirely edible with the flowers most commonly being used in salads, adding quite a bit of color and a slight peppery taste.

Nasturtiums can be used in the garden to draw aphids, whiteflies and cabbage worms away from your more desirable fruits and vegetables. They also repel quite a few pests and may even attract beneficial insects.

These two trap crops are both edible and beautiful, making them a nice addition to any home garden.

Ways to Improve Your Garden

Not everyone knows how to create a beautiful garden. With all the information and knowledge available at your fingertips anyone can find out what they need to know to grow a healthy garden. There is lots of information out there about planting vegetables, herbs, flowering plants, annuals and perennials. A local garden centre is a great place to get information, ideas and help as you work on your garden. If you have friends and relatives who have a knack for gardening you can ask them for ideas and help. To get inspiration for the design and layout of your garden consider reading gardening books and magazines. To get information, ideas and tips watch a garden show on TV. If you’re finding it difficult to figure out how to choose plants appropriate for your climate and soil conditions then you should take a walk around your neighbourhood to see what is working (and what isn’t) for your neighbours.

Spend some time planning out the design of your garden once you have some ideas down on paper. The design you choose will depend on your goals for the garden and what you plan to use it for. In addition, you want to think about what will grow in your climate and what will be easy to grow and cultivate. Don’t forget to consider the soil and drainage on your property. Good design plans are cost effective, flexible and realistic. The size of area you are design will also play a factor. Do you need to use aggregates and stone? Will your design require you to purchase sod, grass seed, rocks or flagstones? Do you need to buy more mulch or soil? Are you planning on adding water features like a waterfall or pond? Before you begin to purchase materials make sure you have a clear goal and plan in place and that you have estimated all possible expenses..

For any project budget is always important to consider and this is no different when it comes to gardening. Before you decide to start a gardening job set a realistic budget. Not only do you want to make a budget you also want to stick to it. Sticking to your budget means that you need to find as many materials and plants on sale as possible. Weekly flyers and sales at your local garden centre is a great way to find deals. You need to balance cost with purchasing healthy plants though because if you buy unhealthy plants it will be expensive to replace them. Some unhealthy plants can also introduce diseases into other places in your garden and spread quickly to other plant varieties, which can be a costly error. Balance your needs by keeping budget in check while also purchasing quality products..

Once you start looking for garden tips you will start to find them everywhere. Purchasing plants that are weed resistant will help you to lower your labour and maintenance. One way to naturally suppress weeds is to choose ground hugging plants. Colourful plants can sometimes be difficult to maintain so an alternative to adding colour to your garden is to use colourful and pretty planting containers, boxes and pots. To keep your garden looking neat you can use border edging which will also keep invasive plants under control. Mixing water-strong granules into the top of your soil will prepare your plants for dry spells and keep them healthy. To make your lawn easier to maintain consider replacing part of it with hardwood decking, gravel or paving and then planting plants along the edges. There are a number of ways to make your garden beautiful and healthy..

Starting a Home Garden

Having a garden is a great idea that is greatly advised to everyone. It provides a fun – filled way of spending one’s time. Not only that but it also a good method of helping the environment. Plants help in renewing the oxygen supply of the world as well as reduce the pollution in the air. They not only provide beauty to our surroundings but they are also a good source of food and other important materials. All of these things are reasons why starting a home garden is recommended to all of us.

Planning the garden is the first thing that must be done by anyone who plans of having one. The type of garden must be considered as this is the basis of all the things that will be done with it. The gardener can choose between flowers, vegetables and fruits or he can make use of a combination of them. After choosing the type, he must now know the things that he will plant. For starters, plants that are easy to grow and nourish is the best thing to have. Other thing that must be considered in this area is the method of planning; when to start; and the location of the garden.

The next thing that must be done in when starting a garden is the familiarization of the different gardening tools and equipment. These highly – specialized tools are needed for all the processes that will be done in the garden. There are garden tools each for digging, cutting, watering and measuring. By knowing and having these tools, the aspiring gardener could make his work easier and faster.

Preparing the garden area should be next on the list. These include removing all weeds as this can compete with the plants for all their basic needs. Although removing them does not often results in a permanent effect, they must still be done in order to avoid many of the disadvantages that come with weeds. After that, the soil must then be turned over so as to soften it more effectively and efficiently. This can be easily done with the use of a shovel or a pick. This is to help the plant to grown easily since it a softer soil will make it easier for the plants to grow and spread their roots. Watering the soil first can also help in softening it before turning it over.

Planting can be done once the soil has been prepared well. For beginners, planting through seeds is not advised since it will take a longer time and a more delicate process. Instead, they should make use of seedlings which can be planted directly to the soil. These can be acquired and purchased from many garden shops and nurseries. After planting, the soil should be moistened around the plants so as to make the plant more secure and stable in the soil. This process is then repeated everyday until the plants are observed to have adjusted to their new environment. After new growths have appeared, fertilizers can now be added to the soil. This is to ensure that the plants will grow healthy and fat. All of these things must be considered by anyone who wants to be successful when starting a home garden on their own.

My suggestions of the best 7 flowers to use in your container garden

You can grow these container garden plants yourself from seed, as I usually do (my next article will tell you how to do this and how to care for them as they grow) or you can buy them as young established plants from the garden centre, DIY store, market stall etc. Got that? Good! Now let me tell you about my favourite bedding plants to use in container garden, these are my favourite for a reason; easy to grow and care for, and quite showy.

Most of the flowers that I use for my containers are commonly known as bedding plants – in the broadest term most bedding plants are half-hardy annual (HHA). For a brief explanation; an ‘annual’ plant is one that grows from seed to flower and then (after producing its own seed) dies all within the same year, ie. ‘annual’. If the plant is ‘hardy’ then this means that it can withstand some difficult weather conditions (heavy rain, frost, etc) without any detrimental effect. If however the plant is ‘half-hardy’ then it can withstand the difficult weather mentioned but only once it is established, so seed germination and propagation of the young seedlings requires some protection from the weather, but once established they are fine. So ‘half-hardy annual is a plant that needs protection to germinate and for the seedlings to grow and produce good roots, it will then be fine outside with no protection and will continue to grow and produce flowers, but will produce seed and eventually die within the same year (often a year is known as a ‘season’ in gardening terms).

Lobelia. Small pretty flowers in shades of white, pinks, blues, and purples and a must for every container garden; wouldn’t be without a few varieties of lobelia, I use them every year. Very easy to grow from seed and care for. Both seed and young plants are reasonably priced and widely available. Lots of varieties; I recommend ‘string of pearls’ – wonderful small bushy plants in mixed shades, ‘crystal palace’ – deep violet/mauve and bushy growth, ‘Cambridge blue’ – another bush lobelia (the name says it all), for your hanging baskets try ‘cascade mixed’ – delightful trailing habit in mixed colours.

Alyssum. Another great little very easy flower for your container garden; I use alyssum ‘carpet of snow’ – wonderful little white scented flowers, and although they are meant to be bushy if you use them around the edge of your containers and hanging baskets they will trail over the edge – which is exactly how I use them for my container garden.

Impatiens. Often known as ‘busy lizzie’, lots of varieties available, all of which are easy to care for but sometimes the germination can be a little erratic, but only rarely and it often depends on the variety and method of propagation. In a good range of colours from white through pinks to reds and purples, there is also some bi-colour flower varieties around also. These beauties can very quickly produce a mass of delightful flowers with little help. My personal favourite container garden flower, but I do tend to purchase these as young plants rather than trying to grow the seed, not that it’s difficult to grow from seed but I have personally not had much luck that way (any advise would be most welcome, please email me). Either way I would feel rather upset if one year I had no Busy Lizzies in my containers.

Geranium. Bringing a warm Mediterranean feel to your container garden planting, these delightful plants (also known as ‘pelargonium‘), often with a dark underside to the large two-tone leafs, and big stems of flower balls in white, pinks and red in lots of varieties. Very easy to grow from seed and care for, and although the geranium is actually half-hardy perennial it is often treated as an annual. Another ‘wouldn’t be without’ to my collection. Plant just a single geranium in a good sized plant pot and use as a stand alone (centre of the patio table for example), or plant about 3 red ones in a container and surround them with ‘cineraria silver leaf’, beautiful sight!

Cineraria. Not exactly a flower but one I feel I must include here. The silver leaf of this stunning plant gives it it’s attraction. Another half-hardy perennial usually treated as annual, this plant can and often is used to great effect with red or blue flowered plants, or plants with dark foliage. Goes well with ‘salvia blaze of fire’.

Salvia. I always use ‘blaze of fire’ – wonderful scarlet flower spikes, but there are other gorgeous varieties available. I plant these in my container garden with ‘cineraria silver leaf’ to create a great contrast. Very easy to grow from seed and reasonably priced.

Dahlia. Another great and easy to grow half-hardy perennial often used as annual. Big single or double flowers with dark foliage, in every colour but blue. These I think are best used alone, by this I don’t mean singularly; I suggest a few or several in one tub with no other type of plants – dahlias are so showy they don’t need anything else. Even if started from seed these plants will produce a tuber (swollen root system) by the end of the season which can then be lifted and stored to use again the following spring. I recommend the many dwarf varieties for your container garden.

That concludes my suggestions for now. There are many other flowers and non-flowering plants available to use in your containers, but the above big 7 are my own personal favourites that I use every year, along with other plants that I vary from year to year.

Vegetable Garden | Home Gardening Articles

Home gardening gives you so much to do and so much to choose, what do you want to plant in your own garden. The vegetable garden can be found in almost every garden, whether small or great shape, want of fresh vegetables from the garden without almost none. It is a good reason, since vegetables is very healthy and also from the garden without questionable ingredients.

In the vegetable garden you can grow pretty much anything you need in the kitchen. Some prefer to pull the vegetable seeds itself; others prefer to buy in the spring of small finish planting, have proved successful vegetable beds, which are created as raised bed. Grooming is simple; you do not bend down too far and raised beds in the mildew reheating that arises among the plants often profitable. In the garden there is always something to do. Frequent saves chopping casting, and provides good aeration of the soil, just as in the ornamental garden.

In the vegetable garden, fertilize only with the best fertilizer, organic fertilizers, receiving the ecological value of the fruit. The important thing when you create a vegetable garden is the selection of plants. Many old varieties are on the rise again. They often have a much more intense flavor, contain many vitamins and as healthy as “modern” vegetables. In the kitchen of our grandparents, they had held a regular place. The trade is looking for one such old variety usually in vain. However, they can grow without any problems, are usually less demanding and hardly susceptible to disease.

Home gardening can support a healthy lifestyle, because we can control what we eat and find out what is contained in our food.

How do I care for an indoor hydrangea plant?

Question by puppetman: How do I care for an indoor hydrangea plant?
We received a 10 inch potted hydrangea. The balls of blossoms at the top are now dried out, but don’t fall off. The skimpy leaves on the stalks come out and then die within a couple of weeks. I water once a week and it gets some sun each day. Do I cut the blossoms off? Any tips? I like the plant.

Answer by utoomy
Yes hydrangea are beautiful. I work in a greenhouse. What i did to mine was, i brought it in this fall cut back maybe 1/4 of the plant depending on how big it is. This is important because they naturally loose their leave over the colder months – so this step saves cleaning them up over n over all winter long. Sun is good place it somewhere it can get 4 hrs or more a day. It will look sad for a while- but it bounces back fast. Mine had almost no leaves at all. Now its full again. It will NOT bloom again until it can be outside in direct sunlight. So aafter u r clear of frost repot it in new soil maybe a bigger pot and put it out for the summer. Dont forget to fert. all summer every two weeks for best blooms. Hope this helps. Good luck.
